James Tuttle’s lifelong passion for music started with a stack of 45 RPM records of kids’ songs and his parents’ old 78’s. It was fueled by the passionate rock and roll of the 60’s and 70’s..
Making his own tapes of the vital music he grew up with, he listened under the covers late into the night. Playing guitar in hometown bands for dances and frat parties drew him into the inner workings of the music. An encounter with some other musicians in a small Colorado mountain town led to work with a group of like-minded musicians who delved deeper into music.
During this time he found his true instrument; the recording studio, with all it offered for shaping and crafting a song. A decade spent in the fertile, rootsy atmosphere of Austin, Texas deepened his understanding of the essence of great song production and mixing. Back in the mountains that first nurtured his sense of music magic, he continues to hone his craft, helping artists realize their goals. James has 28 years of experience in audio engineering. He’s worked at many world-class studios and a more than a few dingy basements. His discography includes over 250 released recordings including work for most of the major labels. He is the head audio engineer for E-Town, a nationally syndicated radio music show heard on over 200 stations. He has mixed shows for over 175 artists including, James Taylor, Shawn Colvin, Randy Newman, Barenaked Ladies, moe, Indigo Girls, and Los Lobos. He currently enjoys an ongoing affiliation with Airshow Mastering, Grammy-winning state of the art studio complex in Boulder, Colorado. He does the majority of his mixing work in a Pro Tools- equipped mix room designed by Sam Berkow “My 25+ years of experience have given me a wealth of creative options to call upon to help an artist find and record their material.” “The new tools of digital technology allow me to further my pursuit of helping artists find just the right setting for their songs. I can now sculpt and shape their music to a degree that was impossible at any price a few years ago. With Pro Tools and my extensive collection of plug-ins I have a limitless palate of sounds to shape a mix.. Airshow’s extensive collection of analog tape machines is another set of tools we can use to enhance any mix. The room is a great setting for mixing in surround sound, yet another creative area I enjoy exploring with my clients.” |
